Woodland's downtown preserves Victorian-era buildings and serves as the cultural and civic heart of the city.
Woodland's downtown took shape in the 1860s after the county seat relocated from Washington (now West Sacramento) in 1862. The arrival of the California Pacific Railroad in 1869 accelerated growth, and by 1871, when Woodland incorporated, the downtown core had established itself along Main Street with Victorian commercial architecture still visible today. The original City Hall and county buildings anchored civic life in this compact district.
In recent decades, Woodland has undertaken careful revitalization of its historic downtown. New restaurants and shops have opened alongside restored buildings, and the Old State Theater, once a single-screen movie palace, expanded into a modern entertainment venue. The district hosts annual events like Stroll Through History, celebrating the era that built Woodland's foundation and drawing both residents and visitors to walk the same blocks where the city's commerce began.
