No-exam life insurance

Details on eligibility for rapid decisions, the process and what happens if you don't qualify.

Many carriers offer rapid underwriting for applicants meeting age and amount thresholds, using your application, prescription records and driving history instead of a medical exam. Some approve the same day. Each quote shows the exam requirement for that specific plan.

What it changes

Accelerated underwriting does not bypass verification. Your answers are checked against records, and a policy issued based on false information can be challenged in its first two years. If the carrier finds discrepancies, it may request an exam or lab work anyway; you can choose to proceed or decline.

Who tends to qualify

Applicants typically under age 60, requesting amounts within the carrier's no-exam limit, with no serious health conditions and no tobacco use within the past year qualify. Some carriers waive exams if you have recent lab work from a physician visit.

A required exam typically takes 20 to 30 minutes at your home or local office, conducted by a paramedical examiner at no cost to you. For healthy applicants, strong exam results can improve your rate class, so the exam often works in your favor.
